64Making Better Food Decisions all the time
I know you love dessert, and you love the fact that you can make healthier choices for your snacking needs, but I want to arm you with the tools to live a healthier life overall, and in order to do that, we sometimes have to stray from the world of desserts, and take a holistic view of food and nutrition. I’m not a food scientists or a nutritionist, so lets go and bother some. Let your food pyramid be your guide (my sincerest apologies to the small, green and copyrighted cricket that coined the much more elegant phrase that I am parodying) Do you remember that bring pyramid that sat on the wall of your health class, it had a basic geometric shape adorned with pictures of apples, or carrots, maybe a glass of milk, or some butter, the food pyramid. Well, I don’t know about you, but I was taught that it was a one size fits all kind of a guideline. It seems, however, that the feds have given in a makeover, and now not only in the food pyramid vertical, but it is fully customizable. It even has its own web site, where you can create a custom ID and track your intake and exercise, to see if your are a couch potato or a healthy and active person. Open up a second window (or a tab, if you browse with Safari or Firefox) and navigate your way over to http://www.mypyramid.gov/ , go ahead I’ll wait. Once you, have enjoyed the graphics click on the “My Pyramid Plan” Link, and input your information, nothing personal, just some basic statistics, and click submit. You’ll see some personalized health links and the option to see your personal plan. Mine suggests two cups of fruit a day, you can see some of my other hubs to see some fruit based desserts that can help you get in your recommended amount of servings. 6 teaspoons of oil a day, means I need to aim for low fat foods, which once again you can find on this very site. Clicking the link to the right will give you a more detailed analysis, and link you to a place where you can track your food and exercise without having to spend money on a more expensive option (like the equally effective weight watchers site). So, while your enjoying my good for your foods, get on the initiative all of the way, and get healthy, using these free and simple guidelines.
